Expanding Literacies, Extending Classrooms
A summer institute for teachers of grades K–8
June 25–28, 2012
The Yale Center for British Art summer institute will enrich teachers understanding of how visual art can support reading, writing, and thinking. Lectures, discussions, and workshops by university faculty, museum curators, and educators will demonstrate how “visual text” can be used in the classroom to enhance literacy instruction.
Institute sessions include hands-on experience with works of art in the Center’s collections, exploring ways to make the museum an extension of the classroom. The institute will give participants the tools they need to make school visits to the Center effective and incorporate visual arts into classroom instruction.
This year we will offer both an introductory course for new attendees and an advanced course for returning teachers. The advanced course will focus on developing choice and voice in artists/writers workshop. Common core standards will be discussed.
Class will run from 10 am to 3:30 pm, Monday–Thursday. Two CEUs will be provided for full participation in the institute. The program is free of charge. Lunch and parking will be provided. Participants will receive an invitation to attend a follow-up professional development day in spring 2013.
If you attend the institute with a colleague or more from the same school, we will offer you a Teacher Resource Packet for your classroom.

Teacher Workshops
Crafting Writing Invitations
Thursday, April 26, 2012
9:30 am–2:30 pm
Workshop led by Patricia Darragh, Reading Consultant, Northford Public School, Instructor, University of New Haven, and Cyra Levenson, Associate Curator of Education, Yale Center for British Art
This workshop will focus on developing writing invitations using a teacher’s sketch journal. Invitations provide a balance of choice and guidance and help students bridge the gap between experience and writing. Utilizing the sketch journal to do your own thinking and reflection, and as a way of modeling that work for students, will create a course for instruction. In this workshop we will focus on generating useful and appropriate invitations based on the needs of your students. The workshop is free, and .5 CEUs will be offered. Register online. Please note that space is limited to 30 participants.
