Through the generosity of Henry E. and Nancy Horton Bartels, the Center is pleased to offer academic year and summer internships to Yale undergraduates. Since the establishment of these programs in 1996, over sixty undergraduates have completed internships at arts institutions throughout the US and abroad.

Nancy Horton Bartels Academic Year Scholarships
The Nancy Horton Bartels Scholar Internships provide funds for four undergraduate students to participate in academic year internships at the Yale Center for British Art and the Yale University Art Gallery. The four internships are offered annually, two at the Center and two at the Art Gallery, and are funded by an endowment established in 2005 by Henry E. and Nancy Horton Bartels, both graduates of Cornell University. The internships will introduce students to museum operations and best practices in the curatorial, conservation, and administrative departments. The interns will work in a department for ten hours per week for two consecutive semesters and will receive a stipend on an hourly basis.

Art Museum Scholar Summer Internships
Art Museum Scholar Summer Internships provide funds for four Yale undergraduate students to participate in summer internships at the Yale Center for British Art and the Yale University Art Gallery or, on occasion, at other art museums. The four internships were named to honor curators at the Art Gallery and former directors of the Center:
- Helen A. Cooper Scholar Intern of American Paintings and Sculpture
- Patricia E. Kane Scholar Intern of American Decorative Arts
- Patrick McCaughey Scholar Intern of British Art
- Duncan Robinson Scholar Intern of British Art
At least one of the four summer internships is to be held at the Yale Center for British Art and one at the Yale University Art Gallery. The internships at the Yale art museums are intended to familiarize students with museum and curatorial department operations. Students seeking opportunities with other art museums must arrange such internships on their own. Although the awards are open to students in any field, preference will be given to Yale students whose interests lie in American art and/or British art. If selected as an Art Museum Scholar Summer Intern, the internship will provide a stipend of up to $3,000. Internships must be a minimum of eight weeks. Internships will be awarded to students who demonstrate superior performance in their respective fields.
