Artist Statement

I want to give the viewer of my photographs an inside look into how I see the world. As a German American, I learned to be open-minded and never judge someone without really knowing their story. I have chosen these pictures to show that situations, people, and things may be different than they initially appear. We must look at a subject closely to really perceive every detail.

My goal is to show how I perceive my environment—perhaps it will inspire viewers to see their own environments from another perspective. Images in our world can be superficial. I want my photographs to create a visual platform for discussion and interpretation. I want to express how diverse and extraordinary our world can be. As a law student, I use words to express and explain scenarios, people, and their feelings. Photography offers me a way to communicate through different instruments: color, light, shade, and perspective.

My wanderlust drives me to explore every corner of our world. Meeting new people, encountering foreign cultures, and discovering new places inspire me to capture these unique moments with my camera. My love of seeing the world through different perspectives has encouraged me to understand and accept differences, however strange they feel in the beginning. Learning, improving, questioning, and understanding motivate my work. The most rewarding part of this course was having students and instructors with different personalities and backgrounds share and discuss their photographs. I hope that viewers feel this positive energy while discovering our work. Enjoy, and feel inspired!
