Concert | Toko Telo

Event time:
Wednesday, October 2, 2019 - 5:30pm
Description:
One of the most notable groups on the world music scene today, Toko Telo reinvents traditional Malagasy musical styles—tsapiky, jihe, beko—with unequalled artistry.

Monika Njava, regarded across Madagascar as the national diva, sings in several dialects, drawing on folktales and everyday village life for her lyrics. She also addresses environmental issues and the empowerment of women. D’Gary is Madagascar’s most well-known musician. His elaborate playing style, characterized by the use of alternate tunings, is studied by guitarists the world over. Joël Rabesolo grew up playing the traditional four-stringed kabosy and is now the most celebrated guitarist of his generation in Madagascar. Currently completing a master’s degree in jazz guitar at the Royal Brussels Conservatory, he interprets the island’s rich array of regional styles with sophistication and extraordinary inventiveness.
