Symposium | Horace Walpole’s “The Mysterious Mother”

Event time:
Thursday, May 3, 2018 - 10:00am to 4:00pm

As part of the yearlong celebrations of the tercentenary of Horace Walpole’s birth, the Lewis Walpole Library and the Yale Center for British Art are collaborating to present a staged reading of Walpole’s play The Mysterious Mother (1768). To complement the reading, the Center will host a one day mini-conference, organized by the Lewis Walpole Library, that will explore aspects of both reading and staging Walpole’s play. Completed just a few years after his celebrated Gothic novel The Castle of Otranto (1764), this underappreciated tale of incest and intrigue was initially circulated only among the author’s friends. Walpole never permitted it to be performed during his lifetime except as a private theatrical event.

A breakout session will look at The Mysterious Mother drawings by Lady Diana Beauclerk. This program is free, but advanced registration is required for the breakout session. Please register here.
