Student Guide Program

The Student Guide Program offers Yale undergraduates from all disciplines the opportunity to engage with original works of art and become familiar with a variety of museum departments.

Student Guide Tours

Student Guide tours are given on the weekends to the general public and academic community, as well as during student-focused events, such as First-Year Orientation and Senior Night. The students choose their own topic, select four to five objects pertaining to their theme, and use the extensive research materials in the Reference Library.

Program Overview

Student guides meet every Friday afternoon during the academic year to learn about the YCBA’s collections, develop an introductory tour based on their interests, and take trips to area museums, galleries, and artists’ studios. Returning student guides have an opportunity to purchase a work of art for the museum through the John F. O’Brien Acquisition Program. Applications are available in the summer for the upcoming academic year.

John F. O’Brien Acquisition Program

As a longtime Friend of British Art, John O’Brien established an endowment in 2014 to support arts education at the YCBA. The endowment aims to increase undergraduates’ appreciation of, and commitment to, the arts by involving them in the acquisition process. The fund supports both the purchase of artworks and the students’ involvement in the acquisition.
