About Jann Haworth

Born in Hollywood, California, in 1942, Haworth is an American artist who became a leading figure of the British pop art movement in the 1960s. She studied art history at the Courtauld Institute of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art. A pioneer of soft sculpture, Haworth was taught sewing by her mother, a skill which contributes to the unique character of her work.

Haworth is best known as the codesigner of the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover, for which she received a Grammy Award in 1968. Her first major exhibition was 4 Young Artists at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London, in 1963, and her work was featured in the landmark exhibition of pop art in the Hayward Gallery, London, in 1968. More recently, Haworth has participated in many large-scale group exhibitions, including Pop Art UK at the Galleria Civica di Modena, Italy (2004); Art and the 60s: This was Tomorrow at Tate Britain (2004); British Pop at the Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao, Spain (2005); and POWER UP: Female Pop Art at the Kunsthalle Wien in Vienna, Austria (2010–11). She has had numerous solo shows throughout Europe and the United States, and her work is in museums and collections throughout the world including the Arts Council of Great Britain, the Tate Britain in London, Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC, and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. Haworth has been commissioned to create numerous public murals in Salt Lake City, including SLC Pepper (2007), which reimagines the iconic album cover; Dennis Hopper Mural (2008); On Broadway (2011); The Work in Progress Mural (2016–20); and the Utah Women 2020 Mural on the historic seven-story Dinwoody Building, which celebrates the centenary of the Nineteenth Amendment. She lives and works in Salt Lake City and Sundance, Utah.

This program is presented through the generosity of the Terry F. Green 1969 Fund for British Art and Culture.
