Thomas J Price talks with Martina Droth, deputy director and chief curator, Yale Center for British Art. Price will discuss his artistic practice as well as his Hackney Windrush Artwork commission, Warm Shores, a permanent public artwork honoring the Windrush community and unveiled in June 2022.
About Thomas J Price
Born in 1981 in London, Price is a multidisciplinary artist who works across film, photography, and sculpture. He studied at Chelsea College of Art and the Royal College of Art, London. Celebrated for his large-scale figurative sculptures, Price engages with issues of interpretation, perception, power, and representation. One of the most important contemporary British sculptors of his generation, he prompts individuals to question whom society deems worthy of a monument and how we collectively occupy space.
Price recently created Warm Shores (2022) for the Hackney Windrush Art Commission. This work, unveiled outside Hackney Town Hall, was the first permanent public sculpture to celebrate the contributions of the Windrush generation and its descendants in the United Kingdom. In 2021 and 2022, the Studio Museum in Harlem presented Price’s work Witness in Marcus Garvey Park. Beyond Measure, Price’s first comprehensive solo exhibition in the United States, will be on view at Hauser & Wirth Downtown Los Angeles from May 25 through August 20. He is currently working on a major forthcoming project, Thomas J Price at the V&A, which will open in July at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
Selected solo exhibitions have been held at the Midland Arts Centre, Birmingham; the Power Plant, Toronto; Royal Academy of Arts, London; Royal College of Art, London; and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, West Bretton. Price’s work is in the collections of the Donum Estate, Sonoma, CA; Government Art Collection, London; Murderme Collection, UK; the Rennie Collection, Canada; and the Wedge Collection, Canada. Selected group exhibitions include Art Basel, Switzerland; The Line, London; Sculpture Milwaukee; Somerset House, London; and the Royal Academy of Arts, London. In 2009 Price received the Arts Council England Helen Chadwick Fellowship. He lives and works in London.
