Apply for “The View from Here”: 2026-2027

The View from Here: Accessing Art Through Photography is a program at the Yale Center for British Art (YCBA) for high school and early college students from the greater New Haven area.

The program invites students to explore photography as an artistic practice, a way of engaging with works of art, and a tool for seeing their world in new ways. Through sustained engagement with original works of art and their own image-making, students develop visual literacy, confidence in their perspectives, and a stronger sense of connection to museums as places for reflection, creativity, and exchange.

Working closely with YCBA educators, curators, and a teaching artist from the Yale Photography program, students learn the fundamentals of photography, using a smartphone or personal digital device. No prior experience with artmaking is required.

The YCBA collection serves as the starting point for inquiry, discussion, and inspiration. Throughout the course, students participate in workshops, group critiques, and conversations that support them in developing artistic ideas, giving and receiving feedback, and reflecting on their own work. The program culminates in an exhibition. Participants receive $500 stipend upon successful completion of the program.

2026–2027 Focus: Landscape and Lived Experience

For the 2026-2027 year, students will work with the exhibition Sightlines: British Landscape Photography 1840 to Now, using landscape as a point of entry to explore questions of place, perception, and lived experience.

Bus passes are provided weekly.

The View from Here is open to United States citizens, permanent residents, and individuals eligible to work in the United States without visa sponsorship. All participants must be able to provide working papers to the Yale Center for British Art, which includes your social security number. We regret that the Yale Center for British Art cannot provide visa sponsorship.
