About this tour
Join us in the galleries as Sarah Guayante, a PhD candidate in English literature at Yale, contextualizes John Constable’s Hadleigh Castle, The Mouth of the Thames—Morning After a Stormy Night (1829) within the history of British expansion.
In her talk, Guayante will demonstrate how Constable reproduces imperial spatial imaginaries in his landscapes and discuss methods for reading British art for sites of resistance.
About the speaker
Guayante is a seventh-year PhD candidate in the English literature department at Yale. Her dissertation studies spatial imaginaries in the eighteenth-century British novel, with a particular interest in the roles that imperial expansion and geology play in the representation of underground spaces across eighteenth-century texts.
