Free admission

Join us for a day of multisensory programs activating our museum through the art and ideas of Guyanese British artist Hew Locke. 

At our fall Community Day focused on the Hew Locke: Passages exhibition, visitors of all ages will find something for themselves, including:

10:30–11 am: Story time in the Reference Library (bilingual English/Spanish)

11 am – 1 pm: Book giveaway with New Haven Reads  

12–3 pm: Bites of Caribbean cuisine from local food trucks Good for the Soul Food and Mi Tai

1:30–2 pm: Story time in the Reference Library (bilingual English/Spanish)

2–4 pm: Make Time! Boats

Performances by Indo-Guyanese drummers Golden Stars Tassa Group: 11 am, 12 pm, and 1:30 pm

The Golden Stars Tassa Group specializes in tassa drumming, an Indo-Guyanese cultural tradition brought to Guyana by indentured laborers from North India. It involves a unique ensemble featuring bowl-shaped tassa drums, a large bass drum (dhol), and hand cymbals (jhal). Some of the different styles of beats and rhythms are known as wedding hand (performed at weddings), tikora (a classic style hand), and dingolay (a party-style hand).

Exhibition tours in English: 12 pm, 2 pm, and 3 pm

Exhibition tours in Spanish: 11 am and 1 pm

With ongoing hands-on activities throughout the day.  

Quiet space and sensory kits are available.
