Research in Action: “Portrait of a Young Man”

Preregistration required
Free admission

Damiët Schneeweisz, Residential Fellow at the YCBA, explores the artistic worlds of the eighteenth-century Caribbean through portrait miniatures.

Look closely at a single artwork through the ongoing research of our residential fellows, research students, and staff. Damiët Schneeweisz is a Residential Fellow at the YCBA, Assistant Curator of Paintings and Drawings at the Victoria and Albert Museum, and a PhD candidate at the Courtauld Institute of Art. Schneeweisz reorients the ‘British’ history of the portrait miniature from the point of view of the Caribbean, to consider how the region was not simply a receiver of artistic forms from Europe, but a space in which those forms were reworked, revalued, and made to bear the weight of colonial life.
