Seascapes: Marine Paintings and Watercolors from the U Collection

This exhibition showcased selections from an extraordinary and anonymous gift of nine marine paintings and twenty-two watercolors given to the Center in 2008. The U Collection traces the course of marine painting in Britain, from seascapes by the Dutch seventeenth-century marine painters who served as exemplars, to ship portraits and battle scenes by the most practiced and renowned practitioners of the art in eighteenth-century Britain, and stunning coastal views by nineteenth-century watercolorists. Included in the exhibition were works by Willem van de Velde the Younger, Peter Monamy, Dominic Serres, Francis Swaine, Nicholas Pocock, John Clevely Jr., Charles Martin Powell, and George Chambers.
