Artist Statement

I was born in Mosbach, Germany, and moved to Connecticut where I currently reside. Over the past year, while cooped up in my house during of the pandemic, my surroundings have come to appear more surreal, leading me to explore photography more deeply. I have always photographed with my iPhone—my go-to camera—but I never saw the pictures I took as photography. Now, looking closer, I realize that I am a photographer.

I was inspired to take this course to make the jump from taking pictures to capturing photographs. Learning the technique and science behind photography resonated with me. I have learned how to take pictures as a tool for painting pictures and communicating.

I do not go places to take photographs; I take photographs of where I am and what I am experiencing. I express my creativity by photographing nature and my surroundings. There is a permanence in shooting nature; I feel a connection. I like going outdoors, working outdoors, camping, and just being outside.

My future with photography is just beginning; I plan on using it every day, whether to capture small moments or monumental events. I will take photography with me on my journey, from campaign protests to the search for a morning sunrise. While I may only be an amateur photographer, and still have much to learn, I am excited to continue developing my skills.
