Postgraduate Research Associate | Conservation

The Yale Center for British Art (YCBA) is offering a six-month Postgraduate Research Associate position in Conservation for an individual who has completed a bachelor’s degree (in art history, studio art, conservation, or a related field) and who seeks to gain experience before applying to a graduate conservation program. We invite applications from individuals from historically marginalized or disadvantaged groups (such as those under-represented in the field, first-generation college graduates, or from economically disadvantaged backgrounds). A demonstrated interest in conservation and preservation is preferred.

The Postgraduate Research Associate will report to the Chief Conservator and will be exposed to conservation activities in three departments at the YCBA: Painting Conservation, Paper Conservation, and Archives. The position is intended to give a recent college graduate experience with a range of activities in conservation including documentation; pest and environmental management; minor treatment; and archival housing as an aspect of preservation management. They will be given at least one object or a discrete group of archival collection material in each of the three departments to research the object’s method of making, document its conservation needs in both writing and photography, and perform minor treatments. They will have opportunities for professional development through lectures, seminars, and workshops and will actively participate in a cohort of preprogram conservation trainees from other Yale collections.

The closing date for applications is May 15, 2024. The compensation for this position is $23,000 for six months. A relocation stipend will be provided as well as $2,500 for professional development. The intended start date for this position is June 1, 2024, and will be negotiated with the successful applicant.

Application materials should be sent by email and should include a cover letter, CV, and contact information for two professional or academic references. Please send all application materials to Rhyannon van Alstyne, rhyannon.vanalstyne@yale.edu, with the subject line “Conservation Post-graduate Research Associate Application.”
