The Yale Center for British Art’s Artful Tales video series explores paintings from the Center’s collection through visual literacy strategies, storytelling, and other learning resources. Tom Lee weaves his tales inspired by the imagery featured in selected paintings and walks you through accompanying educational exercises developed by the visual literacy specialist Patricia Darragh.

About Tom Lee

Lee has been a teaching artist for the Yale Center for British Art’s School Partnership Program for fifteen years. Lee meets with partner schools in New Haven before and after their visits to the Center and leads visual literacy workshops for educators. His goal is to promote deeply engaged museum visits and thoughtful reflection when back in the classroom.

With the Center’s Linda Friedlaender, and educators Patricia Darragh and James Shivers, Lee also leads the Center’s Summer Teacher Institute. Beyond his work at Yale, Lee is the director of artsVOYAGE, an arts-in-education project of Spencertown Academy Arts Center in Spencertown, New York. He has conducted programs on art and literacy for Art Omi, the Ellsworth Kelly Foundation, and Olana, home of the artist Frederic Edwin Church.

As a storyteller, Lee often performs for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Blanton Museum, the Wadsworth Atheneum, the Metropolitan Opera Guild, and the Yale Center for British Art.

About Patricia Darragh

Darragh has been involved with the Yale Center for British Art’s Museum–School Partnership program for the past twelve years. She has presented visual literacy workshops to museum educators, teachers, and students using artworks to enhance close observation and thinking as well as the instruction of writing skills and reading comprehension. In collaboration with Linda Friedlaender, Darragh has participated as an instructional leader for the Center’s Summer Teacher Institute for ten years.

Darragh has taught at the elementary and secondary levels as a teacher and reading specialist for over thirty years. As a curriculum coordinator, she developed a reading language arts curriculum aligned with Common Core State Standards for grades K–5 for the North Branford School District. Additionally, she taught reading strategy and children’s literature as an adjunct professor for the University of New Haven’s master of arts in teaching program.
