Community Day: A Celebration of Color!
Join us for a day of free activities and programs exploring color in Rina Banerjee: Take me, take me, take me … to the Palace of love and Painters, Ports, and Profits: Artists and the East India Company, 1750–1850.
Visitors of all ages are warmly welcome!
10:30–11 am: Story Time, Reference Library
Join an engaging thirty-minute story time with a guest reader from New Haven Reads, featuring books about color. Recommended for ages three to five years, but all are welcome.
11 am–12 pm: Book giveaway with New Haven Reads, Docent Room
The New Haven Reads Book Bank makes books for all ages available for free.
11 am–3:30 pm: Special Display, Study Room
Explore prints, drawings, books, and other materials from the YCBA collection that provide insight into how color shaped and was shaped by artistic exchanges in South Asia in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
11 am–4 pm: Hands-on Table, Library Court
Discover how the artists in Painters, Ports, and Profits used a range of papers from handmade sheets to imported surfaces. Experiment with different types of paper and try burnishing to change the texture and sheen just as artists did centuries ago.
1–4 pm: Imagine and Build, Docent Room
Get inspired by Rina Banerjee’s Take me, take me, take me… to the Palace of love, the sculptural work of art in our Entrance Court. Drop in and build imaginative, colorful constructions with other museum guests.
2–2:30 pm: Story Time, Reference Library

3:30–4:30 pm: The Colors of Raga: An Afternoon of Indian Classical Music, Lecture Hall
Ranendra Das (tabla), founder of PARA Academy of Music and Arts, and New York-based musician Satyaki Dutta (sarod), perform Indian classical ragas. Raga means color, or dye, in Sanskrit and refers to the complex melodies that evoke specific emotions that “color” your mood.
