Day With(out) Art

On December 1, the Yale Center for British Art joins museums, galleries, and arts institutions around the world to observe Day With(out) Art. The YCBA is partnering with Visual AIDS for Day With(out) Art 2021 to help present free screenings of ENDURING CARE. The video program highlights strategies of community care within the ongoing HIV epidemic, and features newly commissioned work by Katherine Cheairs, Cristóbal Guerra, Danny Kilbride, Abdul-Aliy A. Muhammad and Uriah Bussey, Beto Pérez, Steed Taylor, and J Triangular and the Women’s Video Support Project. 

In collaboration with Yale’s Office of LGBTQ Resources, the Yale Public Humanities Department, and the Yale University Art Gallery, the YCBA is cosponsoring a screening of ENDURING CARE on Wednesday, December 1, from 11 am to 4 pm. A looped screening of the hour-long video program will be shown in the Office of LGBTQ Resources Café at 135 Prospect Street, and is open to all Yale ID holders. Refreshments will be served, and AIDS Project New Haven will provide materials and information.

About Day With(out) Art

The first Day With(out) Art was organized by Visual AIDS in 1989. Coinciding with World AIDS Day on December 1, it was a call for action and mourning that would draw attention to the devastating impact of AIDS on the arts community. Hundreds of museums and galleries participated in the one-day moratorium on exhibitions, shrouding works of art and replacing them with information about the virus.

Thousands of arts institutions and organizations around the world continue to unite on December 1 to demonstrate the power of art to raise awareness about the AIDS crisis, which is far from over. Since the onset of the epidemic in the early 1980s, 79.3 million people worldwide have been infected and 36.3 million have died of AIDS. In 2020, 37.7 million people were living with HIV and 1.5 million were newly infected.
