Rachel Rose: Enclosure

Seven nineteenth-century paintings from the Yale Center for British Art are on loan to Gladstone Gallery for the New York premiere of Enclosure, a film and installation by Rachel Rose (Yale BA 2009) originally co-commissioned by Luma Foundation and Park Avenue Armory. Unfolding against an agrarian community on the verge of obsolescence, Enclosure addresses the catastrophic psycho-social and ecological disturbances triggered by the advent of capitalism and industrialization. This monumental project also includes a new publication and a suite of gravures by the artist. A part of the installation, the gallery presents a selection of paintings from the YCBA’s collections, including Samuel Palmer’s Harvest Moon and Joseph Wright of Derby’s Matlock Tor by Moonlight, that inspired Rose’s vision for this expansive body of work. Rose developed her relationship with the works while an undergraduate Student Guide at the museum.
