During Queen Victoria’s Jubilee in 1887, James McNeill Whistler attended a naval review off Spithead and recorded the occasion in a series of twelve etchings. A proof set of these delicate, breezy etchings, given to the Yale Center for British Art in 2002 by Robert Whittemore, BA 1943, was the focus of this small exhibition. Also included was the Center’s painting Nocturne in Blue and Silver, which came from the same renowned collection of Whistler’s work, and a group of Whistler’s watercolors from the collection of Paul Mellon. A varied selection of recent acquisitions accompanied the Whistler display.
