Visiting Scholar Awards

Visiting Scholar Awards are open to academics, museum professionals, artists, and doctoral candidates who are working in any field related to British visual and material culture. Recipients of the award have the opportunity to access the Center’s rich holdings of paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, rare books, and manuscripts, as well as material from the wider Yale network of museums, libraries, and special collections. 

Eligibility

Academics, museum professionals, artists, and doctoral candidates who are working in any field related to British visual and material culture are eligible to apply. Predoctoral applicants from North America must be ABD to qualify.

One award per annum is reserved for a member of the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies. Scholars may apply to the Delaware Art Museum, Wilmington, for awards in the same year; every effort will be made to offer consecutive dates.

Award Period

Residency dates for successful applicants in the 2020–21 cycle may be held between July 1, 2020, and June 30, 2021, for a period between one to three months. 

Travel and Accommodation

Awards cover the cost and arraingement of a J1 visa, travel to and from New Haven, and include accommodations as well as a living allowance. Recipients are required to be in residence in New Haven for the duration of their award and must be free of all other significant professional responsibilities during their stay.

The deadline for the 2020–21 application cycle is Monday, January 13, 2020Applicants should complete the online application and upload a cover letter (no more than one page), a CV, and an outline of the project (no more than three pages) that includes an indication of the resources to be consulted at the Center. Applicants should also provide prefered months of tenure, a title for their research project, and the names of two referees.
