Terms and Conditions for Submissions

1. Introduction

The Gateway to British Art Prize is organized by the Yale Center for British Art (the “Center”).

These Terms and Conditions for Submissions, together with any specific guidelines or rules notified by the Center as relevant to the Gateway to British Art Prize, apply to entrants (”you”) submitting their work for entry to the Gateway to British Art Prize. By entering the Gateway to British Art Prize, you agree to be bound by these Terms and Conditions and you acknowledge that your personal information will be used in accordance with the Yale University Privacy Statement.

The Center reserves the right to cancel or modify the Gateway to British Art Prize or these Terms and Conditions and related guidelines, submission deadlines, or judging criteria, at any time and without prior notice. Any such changes will be posted on the Gateway to British Art Prize website available here.

2. Gateway to British Art Prize rules

The Gateway to British Art Prize is only open to students currently enrolled in at least one humanities class for the current semester at Gateway Community College. Previous winners are not eligible for entry.

All entries must be made in accordance with the Guidelines for Submissions.

Your entry will be disqualified if:

  • Information submitted by you is found to be untrue;
  • Your entry is found to contain plagiarized material; or
  • Your entry contains any unlawful (for example, defamatory or obscene) material.
3. Awarding process

Monetary prizes (as set forth on the Center’s Gateway to British Art Prize website) will be awarded to selected prize winners either at or after the awards ceremony, which is expected to take place remotely due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

All decisions made by the Gateway to British Art Prize judges, including the selection of winning entries, are final. Unfortunately, we will not be able to provide feedback for non-selected entries.

4. Copyright permissions for winning entries

You retain copyright ownership in your work. By submitting your entry, you hereby authorize and grant to the Center a non-exclusive, royalty-free, irrevocable right and license to publish, store, display, distribute, transmit, share, and adapt your work for the purposes of evaluating your entry, publishing winning entries, and promoting the Center, Yale University, and the Gateway to British Art Prize.

The Center in its discretion may publish winning entries of the Gateway to British Art Prize on the Center’s and other Yale University websites, social media channels, newsletters, and other publications. You understand that winning entries will be deposited with and be preserved by the Yale Center for British Art’s department of Archives and the Center is not under any obligation to utilize the rights granted in these Terms and Conditions.

You will be credited in all reproductions of your work.

5. Filming and photography

In the event of any filming or photography by the Center at a Gateway to British Art Prize event, the permission of the attendees will be sought in advance. All attendees will be asked to sign a standard release form.

6. Expenses

Unfortunately, the Center cannot be responsible for any expenses incurred by entrants in connection with their participation in the Gateway to British Art Prize.

7. Privacy

The Center is committed to protecting your privacy and will use all personal information submitted by you in connection with your entry in accordance with the Yale University Privacy Statement.

Personal information of entrants will be used solely for the purpose of administering submissions for the Gateway to British Art Prize. Your name and entry will be shared with the members of the judging panel and, where your work is selected as a winning entry, may be published on the Center’s and other Yale University websites, social media accounts, newsletters, and other publications.

8. General

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Yale University acting by and through the Yale Center for British Art herein excludes its liability for any direct or indirect damages or losses of any kind arising out of your participation in the Gateway to British Art Prize, including any entrant's use of any of the monetary prizes.

If any provision of these Terms and Conditions is found to be invalid by any court having competent jurisdiction, the invalidity of that provision will not affect the validity of the remaining provisions of these terms, which shall remain in full force and effect.

The Gateway to British Art Prize and these Terms and Conditions shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Connecticut, without regard to conflict of laws provisions. The state and federal courts in New Haven, Connecticut shall have exclusive jurisdiction to resolve disputes arising hereunder.

By submitting your entry, you affirm and represent that:

  • you are 18 years or older and a currently enrolled student at Gateway Community College in New Haven, Connecticut;
  • all information submitted with your entry is true;
  • you are the sole creator of your submitted work;
  • your work does not infringe the copyright or any other intellectual property or proprietary
  • rights of any party, does not defame any party, and does not contain confidential or otherwise protected information that should not be shared publicly; and
  • you have read and understand these Terms and Conditions for Submissions and the Yale University Privacy Policy.
