The Center’s docents are now online! Join us for a series of tours exploring the museum’s collections, architecture, and special exhibitions. Each presentation is thirty minutes, with time reserved for conversation and questions.
About this tour
Margaret Mann, Yale Center for British Art docent since 2013, leads a brisk trot through four centuries of equine art collected by Paul Mellon and given to the Yale Center for British Art. A man with a lifelong passion for horses, Mellon purchased George Stubbs’s 1774 painting Pumpkin with a Stable-lad in 1936 and never looked back. During this virtual tour, sample from Mellon’s vast collection of equine art by examining works by Stubbs along with his predecessors, contemporaries, and successors to see how the horse in art evolved over the centuries—from a static template to an individualized portrait to an animal in motion.
