Rachel Stratton, independent scholar and curator of twentieth- and twenty-first-century art, offers a closer look at The Sisters

Join us in the galleries for this “Beyond Britain” talk on an artwork that highlights the global histories in the YCBA. Rachel Stratton is an independent scholar and curator of twentieth- and twenty-first-century art. When Augustus John exhibited The Sisters in London in 1938, it was celebrated by British audiences and helped to revive John’s ailing career. This talk will explore how John chose to depict the sisters, who worked in a hotel in Jamaica where John stayed in 1937, and why it struck a chord with the British public.
